The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the origins and main characteristics of historiography in the nineteenth century in Brazil concerning the relationships existing between paradigms of Classicism and modern paradigms. O que fabrica o historiador quando faz história, hoje? Ensaio sobre a crença na história (Brasil séculos XIX-XXI)

The general problem of this essay is to keep pursuing the historiographical appropriations of time by the ancients and the moderns, an issue I have been dealing with since previous researches. Specifically, I intend to develop a conceptual genealogy of the literary motif made popular by Cicero, that History is the master of life: historia magistra vitae. This long-term analysis is necessary as a condition to perceive the different receptions, perceptions and retractions that this constitution acquired until it reached our times. In this long crossing, I aim at mapping situations in which historia magistra vitae converts itself in the twin images of authority and tradition and, finally, in belief. These two images, when allied to historical determinations of time and its discursive shapes, have the ability to produce explanations to the historical movement of past and present, a typically silent movement, whose effects create distinct means of understanding of the experience of lived time.O problema geral deste ensaio é o de continuar perseguindo as apropriações historiográficas do tempo pelos antigos e modernos, tema que já venho tratando em pesquisas anteriores. Mais especificamente, pretendo realizar uma genealogia conceitual do topos popularizado por Cícero de que a história é mestra da vida: historia magistra vitae. A longa duração é necessária como condição à análise das diferentes recepções, percepções e retratações que a formulação adquiriu até chegar ao nosso presente. Nessa longa travessia procurarei mapear situações em que a historia magistra vitae converte-se nas figuras gêmeas da autoridade e da tradição e, finalmente, em crença. Essas duas figurações quando aliadas a indeterminações historiográficas do tempo e suas formas discursivas têm a capacidade de produzir explicações para o movimento histórico do passado e do presente, uma movimentação normalmente silenciosa, cujos efeitos geram maneiras distintas de entendimento da experiência do tempo vivido

The purpose of this article is to make offer an initial discussion of the use of the poetry of the English historian and poet, Robert Southey’s by the Brazilian historian, Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen in his writing of Brazil’s history. Thus, this analysis aims at understanding the Brazilian historiographic experience in the 19th century on the basis of the relation between history and the fiction genre represented by poetry.
